Plant health care
By the time you notice, the damage is done.
Spotted leaves, a sticky film on the branches, an evergreen that browns out over winter. Most problems with trees and shrubs start weeks or months before they show, and once a pest is established, getting rid of it can take several seasons.
Our plant health care program is built around the season instead: seven visits, each starting with an inspection, with fertilizer, insect, and disease treatment timed to when it does the most good. That is what integrated pest management means in practice.
The season, visit by visit
Seven visits, timed to the season
Every visit starts with an inspection, then treats each plant based on what it needs.
-
Visit 1: Late winter to early spring
We inspect trees and shrubs for harmful pests and, where needed, apply horticultural oil, which smothers overwintering insects and their eggs before they can do damage.
-
Visit 2: Spring
Preventative fungicide for plants prone to leaf spot and powdery mildew during the critical infection period, a systemic insect control against leaf-feeding insects, and a foliar and granular fertilizer.
-
Visit 3: Early summer
Systemic insecticides and fungicides for disease and emerging pests such as aphids, leafminers, sawflies, and scale, plus a liquid foliar fertilizer.
-
Visit 4: Summer
Continued inspection and treatment for fungal disease and active pests, including scale insects, lace bugs, and spider mites, with another liquid fertilizer application.
-
Visit 5: Late summer to fall
Protection for evergreens against winter diseases, a liquid foliar fertilizer, and a slow-release granular fertilizer where plants need it going into dormancy.
-
Visit 6: Fall
Dormant oil to control scale, mites, and overwintering insect eggs, along with another inspection of every tree and shrub.
-
Visit 7: Late fall to early winter
An anti-desiccant that leaves a thin, waxy barrier on broadleaf evergreens and thin-needled conifers to help prevent moisture loss and winter burn.
Good to know
The program focuses on plants under 20 feet tall; larger trees need specialized treatment. Certain pests, diseases, and invasive insects may need separate services or may not be treatable once damage has begun, and very infected plants may need a corrective root injection, at a separate rate, before the program starts.
Healthy plants start with well-kept beds. Pair the program with landscape maintenance for weeding, pruning, and seasonal upkeep, or reset overgrown beds first with an initial yard cleanup
The local picture
What our trees and shrubs are up against
Northern Virginia's climate is good for plants, and just as good for what attacks them:
-
Humid summers breed fungus.
Leaf spot and powdery mildew thrive in Northern Virginia summers. Preventative fungicide in spring, during the critical infection period, does far more than treating once leaves are already spotted.
-
Scale, lace bugs, and mites are common here.
These pests feed quietly on the shrubs and ornamental trees that fill local yards. Regular inspection catches them early, when they are easiest to control.
-
Winter burn hits evergreens.
In our Zone 7b/8a winters, drying winds, winter sun, and frozen soil pull moisture out of broadleaf evergreens and conifers. The late-fall anti-desiccant is aimed squarely at that.
-
Prevention beats rescue.
An active infestation is rarely a one-and-done fix. It can take several seasons of treatment, and some plants do not survive. A season-long program keeps most problems from getting that far.
Inspect every visit, treat what needs it, and plants stay healthy.

Honest by default
Is plant health care a good fit for your yard?
We’re usually a strong fit if you:
- Have ornamental trees and shrubs under 20 feet you want to keep healthy
- Want problems caught early, before they turn into losing a plant
- Prefer a season-long program over calling someone once damage shows
We’re probably not the right fit if you:
- Need large trees treated (they require specialized tree care)
- Want a single spray to fix an infestation that is already established
Some pests, diseases, and invasive insects need separate services, and badly infected plants may need a corrective root injection, at a separate rate, before the program begins. We will tell you up front if yours do.

Five-star reviews from Northern Virginia homeowners
Fourteen years of consistent, communicative property care, and one yard at a time, it’s earned the kind of trust that shows up in the reviews.
We can't say enough positive things about Potomac Lawn Professionals. After our prior landscaping team left our area, our gardens and lawn fell into severe disrepair. We saw Potomac Lawn Professionals work at a neighbors in the area and we were given their contact information. They were extremely responsive and had a team at our home within a day to provide a quote. We're so pleased with the results. Their team - Michael, Louis, Selvin, and Demetrio - were wonderful. They were prompt, professional, and made our yard something we can be proud of again. The company's text and email based post-service communication is also top-notch! We feel very informed and satisfied.
David and his team are the best in the business in Arlington. Would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for landscaping or lawn care services and wants a company that cares about delivering top notch results. Their work speaks for itself.
