Mulch installation in Arlington, VA, done the way your beds actually need.

Double-shredded hardwood mulch at one to two inches, spread over beds that are weeded and edged first, and kept off trunks and stems. Fresh color, fewer weeds, healthier roots. Backed by more than 600 five-star reviews and fourteen years caring for Northern Virginia properties.

More isn't better

Good mulch is about the bed underneath, not the pile on top.

Most mulch jobs go wrong the same way: a thick layer dumped over last year's mulch, right on top of the weeds, and heaped up against every tree trunk. It looks generous for a few weeks. Then the weeds push through, the clay underneath stays soggy, and the trees and shrubs pay for it over the next few years.

Done right, mulch is the finishing step on a bed that has already been weeded, edged, and pruned, a modest fresh layer that protects the soil and lets the old mulch keep breaking down into it. That is how we install it.

What's included

What every mulch install includes

Whether it is a one-time refresh or part of a plan, the work is the same.

  • Double-shredded hardwood mulch

We install double-shredded brown hardwood mulch. The double shredding gives a finer, even texture that knits together, stays put in rain, and breaks down steadily into the soil.

  • Beds prepared first

Mulch goes down over clean beds, not over weeds and debris. When beds need it, a bed cleanup or landscape maintenance visit comes first, so weeds are pulled, edges are crisp, and the bed is ready before the new layer goes on.

  • One to two inches, spread evenly

A fresh layer of about one to two inches across your garden beds: enough to refresh color, hold moisture, and block weed seed, without piling on so much that it suffocates roots.

  • Kept off trunks and stems

We pull mulch back from tree trunks, shrub stems, and the house foundation instead of mounding it up, the way extension horticulturists recommend.

Why only one to two inches?

Mulch builds up year after year. Extension horticulturists recommend keeping the total layer to about three inches and keeping it off trunks, because deeper mulch holds water against roots and bark, starves roots of air, and cannot break down properly. A one-to-two-inch refresh tops up what has broken down instead of burying the bed.

Mulch lasts longest on beds that stay weeded and pruned. Keep them that way all year with landscape maintenance, and clear the beds again each fall with leaf cleanup

The local picture

Why we mulch differently here

Northern Virginia's soil, trees, and weather all change what good mulching looks like:

A Potomac Lawn Professionals crew member caring for garden beds in Northern Virginia
  • Clay soil holds water, so depth matters.

Arlington and Falls Church sit on heavy clay that drains slowly. Thick mulch over clay keeps roots wet and short of oxygen, which is why we refresh beds a little at a time rather than burying them.

  • Mulch volcanoes are everywhere here.

Mulch heaped against tree trunks is one of the most common sights in Northern Virginia neighborhoods. It holds moisture against the bark, invites rot, insects, and voles, and can lead to roots that girdle the tree over time.

  • Summer heat and storms test every bed.

Hot, humid summers dry out bare soil fast, and summer downpours wash it away. A steady layer of mulch keeps soil temperature even, holds moisture through dry spells, and keeps soil from splashing onto plants.

  • It is the finishing step, not the whole job.

Fresh mulch looks best and works best on beds that are already weeded, edged, and pruned. That is why we pair it with cleanups and landscape maintenance instead of dumping it on top of whatever is there.

Prep the bed, keep the layer thin, keep it off the bark, and mulch does its job for years.

Standalone or bundled

Two ways to get it done

Just want the beds refreshed? Mulch usually goes down right after an initial yard cleanup (from $797), priced by bed area with no separate minimum. If your beds are already clean, mulch on its own starts at $397.

Want the beds looked after all year? Mulch installation is included in the Timesaver and Lifesaver plans, alongside monthly landscape maintenance.

Honest by default

Is our approach to mulch a good fit for your beds?

We’re usually a strong fit if you:

  • Want beds that look fresh and stay healthier, not just darker for a few weeks
  • Like the idea of mulch topped up a little each year instead of piled on
  • Want beds weeded and edged before new mulch goes down

We’re probably not the right fit if you:

  • Want a thick three- or four-inch layer dumped on every bed each year
  • Want mulch spread over existing weeds without cleanup first

Deep mulch looks generous on day one, but on our clay soils it holds too much water, starves roots of air, and can damage trees over time. A thinner, regular refresh keeps beds healthier and looking good longer.

Five-star reviews from Northern Virginia homeowners

Fourteen years of consistent, communicative property care, and one yard at a time, it’s earned the kind of trust that shows up in the reviews.

The Potomac Lawn Professionals team just finished my fall clean up and mulching and I have to say that they exceeded my expectations. My house and property maintenance were a low priority for the previous owners and while I tried to care for the landscaping myself the last eight months, I just couldn't keep up and had to call in the experts. I am so glad I did and will never look back. They worked incredibly hard and left my property looking fantastic. Absolutely recommend!

We can't say enough positive things about Potomac Lawn Professionals. After our prior landscaping team left our area, our gardens and lawn fell into severe disrepair. We saw Potomac Lawn Professionals work at a neighbors in the area and we were given their contact information. They were extremely responsive and had a team at our home within a day to provide a quote. We're so pleased with the results. Their team - Michael, Louis, Selvin, and Demetrio - were wonderful. They were prompt, professional, and made our yard something we can be proud of again. The company's text and email based post-service communication is also top-notch! We feel very informed and satisfied.

Common questions

Mulch installation in Arlington, VA: answered

How much does mulch installation cost in Arlington, VA?

Mulch usually goes down right after an initial yard cleanup (from $797), and is then priced by bed area with no separate minimum. If your beds are already clean and only need mulch, mulch on its own starts at $397. It is also included in the Timesaver plan (from $379/month) and the Lifesaver plan (from $579/month), alongside monthly landscape maintenance. All plan prices are starting points for lots up to 5,500 sq ft.

What kind of mulch do you use?

We install double-shredded brown hardwood mulch. Its finer texture knits together so it stays in place, looks even, and breaks down steadily into the soil.

How deep do you install mulch?

About one to two inches. Extension horticulturists recommend keeping the total mulch layer to roughly three inches at most, so refreshing beds with a thinner layer each year keeps the total in a healthy range as the old mulch breaks down.

Why not put down three inches like some companies?

Mulch keeps building up year after year. Adding three inches on top of last year's layer quickly leads to beds that are too deep, which holds excess moisture in clay soil, starves roots of oxygen, and causes problems for trees and shrubs. A one-to-two-inch refresh keeps beds healthy and still looks fresh.

Do you pull weeds and edge the beds first?

Yes. If the beds need it, a bed cleanup or landscape maintenance visit comes before mulch, so beds are weeded and edged and the new mulch goes down on a clean surface. New mulch never goes down over weeds.

Do you pile mulch around trees?

No. We keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks, shrub stems, and the foundation. Mulch heaped against bark, often called a mulch volcano, holds moisture against the tree and invites rot, insects, and rodents.

When is the best time to mulch?

Spring is the most popular time, and the earlier it goes down, the better it blocks weeds before they get going. Many customers also add a fall mulch to keep the beds looking sharp through the holidays. If you are on a landscape maintenance plan, we schedule it for you.

Do you remove the old mulch?

Usually not. Old mulch that has broken down becomes part of the soil, and because we add a thinner layer each time, the beds do not build up to an unhealthy depth. If old mulch has clumped or matted into a crust that water cannot get through, we remove it first.

Is there a contract?

There are no long-term binding contracts. Plans are priced monthly. If something isn't right, tell us within 24 hours of the visit and we'll come back and make it right.

What areas do you serve for mulch installation?

Arlington is the primary service area. We also serve nearby Northern Virginia communities including Falls Church, McLean, Tysons, Vienna, Dunn Loring, Idylwood, Pimmit Hills, Seven Corners, Lake Barcroft, and Bailey's Crossroads.
