Nitrogen

However, too much nitrogen can damage your turf and cause brown patches that are known as fertilizer burn. We always use the perfect amount of nitrogen in our fertilizers for optimal health!

- Phosphorus is the most important nutrient used for healthy root growth. When attempting to establish a new lawn, phosphorus is greatly beneficial to the development of the lawn’s root system. When To Fertilize Your Lawn
Fertilization and weed control treatments typically begin in early spring and can last through early winter. We have designed a year-round program that utilizes an organic product, a traditional chemical product, or a combination of either product, all of which will be tailored to the needs of your lawn at various times throughout the year. The technicians we send out to your property will apply fertilizer and weed control treatments in the following stages:
As your lawn begins to emerge after the effects of winter thaw, we will apply an appropriate early season fertilizer via spoon-feeding applications. Pre-emergent crabgrass control will be applied to make sure unwanted crabgrass growth is stopped before it even begins. Any broadleaf weeds that have already emerged will also be treated at this time.
We will return later in the springtime to apply a follow-up treatment of pre-emergent for crabgrass and broadleaf weed control to make sure those weeds do not try to make a home in your lawn.
When the summer sun starts to warm your turf, pests will start looking for lawns to invade. To prevent any such invasion, we will apply an insecticide fertilizer and grub control treatment at this time. Weed control efforts will continue in early summer, which will include a focus on controlling broadleaf weeds, sedges, and grassy weeds.
This time of year is ideal for an application of our organic soil conditioner, which includes humic acid, kelp, and other natural micronutrients that are not found in a traditional fertilizer product. The same weed control efforts applied during the previous visit will continue through this stage.
As fall approaches, we apply fertilizer that is designed to encourage new seed establishment and promote existing root growth. At this point, weed control treatments will focus mainly on emerged broadleaf weeds.
When your lawn begins to enter into the dormant months, we will revert back to spoon-feeding smaller doses of fertilizer to your turf. This stage will be the final broadleaf weed control treatment of the year.
During our winter visit, we will apply lime and other mineral supplements that will winterize your turf and help to balance your lawn’s pH level. This treatment is sure to give your lawn the best chance it can have to survive the winter conditions.
Types Of Lawn Fertilizers

The two main categories of fertilizer are liquid and granular, and each has unique features and benefits. Depending on the time of year and the needs of your lawn, we will use both types of fertilizers during our visits.
Liquid fertilizer is great to use as a starter fertilizer for young lawns or lawns emerging early in the growing season. This type of fertilizer is absorbed very quickly, which allows the nutrients to be absorbed at a faster rate. Liquid fertilizers also allow for a more controlled concentration of nutrients, as the amount of nutrition in each droplet of liquid is essentially the same.
Granular fertilizer comes in the form of dry clumps/granules. This type of fertilizer provides a more slow release of nutrients, which means that it can be absorbed into the soil over a longer period of time. Due to its slow-release nature, granular fertilizers are great for late fall applications to help sustain the health of your turf during the colder weather.
The Importance Of Weed Control
Our fertilization program includes weed control treatments in order to maximize the nutritional intake of the fertilizers we apply. Weeds feed off of the same nutrients as regular turfgrass. If weeds are allowed to grow in your lawn without any attempt to control them, your grass will suffer and could start to form dead patches as a result. We aim our efforts at making sure your lawn does not have to compete with weeds for food. Controlling and preventing weeds while we fertilize your lawn is the best way to ensure that your lawn is well-fed and healthy. Look out for the following types of weeds that are common in Virginia:
- Chickweed – This weed is identifiable by its small white flowers. It grows in dense concentrations close to the ground.
- Dandelion – These are the same weeds you probably plucked and played with as a child, but they are actually very strong and resilient weeds that damage your turf. They are characterized by their bright yellow flowers and can be found throughout most of the year.
- Crabgrass – This is a type of grassy weed that looks similar to regular turfgrass and often appears where your lawn is already struggling to grow. If you see clumps of tall grass that are growing much faster than the surrounding grass, you are likely seeing crabgrass.

- Spotted Spurge – You can spot this weed in your yard by looking for its red spots and milk-like sap that gets released when it is split open. Spotted spurge will grow quickly in thick clusters.
